Tribulus terrestris, a tropical vine native to Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, is popularly used to support sexual function in both women and men. Tribulus may also reduce episodes of angina pectoris (chest pain), reduce blood pressure, and reduce high cholesterol according to various studies.
Pausinystalia yohimbe is an evergreen tree native to parts of western Africa like southwestern Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Congo. Yohimbe bark has been used medicinally for fevers, leprosy, cough, heart disease, and as a local anesthetic. Its uses as an aphrodisiac and to improve erectile dysfunction are more modern. Yohimbe bark has been shown in some research studies to increase blood flow, dilate blood vessels, raise the metabolic rate, reduce appetite, and enhance fat burning.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root is native to Sri Lanka, India, Africa, and Pakistan. A cooling, relaxing adaptogen and tonic, this plant is useful for ‘building up’ people who are debilitated from long term stress. Ashwagandha helps acute and chronic stress as well as those struggling with insomnia, inflammatory diseases, and anxiety.
Maca (Lepidium) is a cruciferous vegetable in the mustard family, native to Peru where it is used as both food and medicine. Maca is related to radishes and turnips. Medicinally, maca is thought to enhance endurance, libido, fertility, and strength. It may help to improve sperm count and motility as well as increase semen volume.
Panax ginseng- Also called Chinese ginseng or Asian ginseng, this plant has been in use since at least the 1st century C.E. Its many constituents, such as ginsenosides and panaxans, contribute to effects such as supporting immune function, lowering blood sugar, improving libido and erectile dysfunction, increasing sperm count, and enhancing physical and intellectual performance.
Epimedium (Horny Goat Weed) is a traditional plant used in Asian medicine primarily as a yang tonic, a kidney tonic, and an aphrodisiac. The name “horny goat weed” is a literal translation of the Chinese yin yang huo. Epimedium is best used in combination with other herbs. Research has proven its traditional uses for erectile dysfunction and atherosclerosis. Studies have also shown that it may be of some benefit for improving sex drive particularly in people with kidney failure, for protection against osteoporosis, for enhancing the immune system of people undergoing dialysis, and even inhibiting cancer cell growth (in vitro). People with a history of steroid use (i.e., prednisone) may especially benefit from using Epimedium.
